View Disability as Possibility

Bad days happen. Obstacles get in the way. Plans go awry and parades do get rained on. But how many of us have the fortitude to not only find the silver lining, but to exceed even the highest expectations in overcoming whatever impediment lies before us? The inspirational story of this month’s speaker will stir in you a strength and determination that will help you conquer whatever challenge you may be facing.

Sarah Castle, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Jackson County, became paralyzed in 1995 after acquiring Acute Transverse Myelitis, an immune system malfunction that causes damage to the nerves, and ultimately paralysis. Join us for the July luncheon, “View Disability as Possibility” and hear Sarah’s story as she shares with us her journey of success.

Sarah will also share her perspective on disability, stereotypes and challenges she faces. She’ll speak on obstacles in employment for people with disabilities, including society’s perception of disability and getting over those barriers. Sarah has become an active advocate for people with disabilities, serving as President of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Board of Directors and as a member of the United States Olympic Committee Athlete Advisory Council. 

Additionally, Sarah is a four-time Paralympian, has won multiple medals at World Championships and the ParaPan American Games, as well as other international and national competitions in both swimming and wheelchair basketball.
