A Message from Gold Sponsor, Woodhaven
If you live, work, shop, worship, volunteer, eat out, or attend events in Columbia, you may not even know that you are doing so right alongside the men and women with developmental disabilities who receive supports from Woodhaven. The November QMB is your chance to learn more.
This year, Woodhaven is celebrating 50 years of helping people with developmental disabilities learn, grow and succeed in our community. It opened with the support of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1964, filling an important need for families across the United States by providing education, training and homes for children and young adults with developmental disabilities.
Columbia was chosen as Woodhaven’s home because of its growing, vibrant community and the location of the flagship campus of the University of Missouri, an important partner. Woodhaven has experienced many changes through the years as it transitioned from providing services for children and young adults on a campus-based setting to empowering individuals with developmental disabilities to live independently in their own homes and apartments in neighborhoods throughout Columbia. Woodhaven attributes its continued success throughout its 50 year history to the relationships it has maintained with the many dedicated community partners in business, education and churches here in mid-Missouri.
Today, Woodhaven provides individualized supports to 115 men and women designed to meet their specific needs, most often 24 hours a day. As the individuals they support are living longer than had been thought possible when Woodhaven opened 50 years ago, they are striving to meet a whole new set of challenges.
Woodhaven recently announced a $1.9 million fundraising effort to construct two buildings to grow their services for people with disabilities who are aging and medically fragile or need specialized behavioral supports. You can learn more about Woodhaven and the people they support throughout their lifetimes at www.woodhaventeam.org.
